A Backyard Bungalow
Outdoor space has become such a respite for us all during the past two years. Our yards have truly become an extension of our home—giving us a breath of fresh air and some much needed extra space. Given this space has become such a central family figure, a thoughtful backyard design is now more important than ever. We approached this backyard bungalow by carefully thinking through how the space would be used, and designed “rooms” accordingly.
Entertaining would be the primary use in this space (almost doubling the home’s square footage!), so we wanted to keep an open flow while giving people concrete areas to naturally gather. The dining area flows right off the home’s sliding glass doors, framed by carefully hung cafe lights and a meadow-inspired garden. A slatted teak farmhouse table is complimented by vintage iron chairs and a wicker bench. All sit atop beautiful tumbled bluestone pavers.
An antique trough fountain and copper spout gurgles in the background to help drown out road noise. Just beyond the fountain is the firepit area, which is designed to be an unpretentious, low-key hangout spot. A round fire pit sits atop a tan decomposed granite, and is grounded by a custom built-in bench that’s made of concrete and ipe. The bench is designed to be low off the ground and deep, for quality lounging. This area is punctuated by two young olive trees which will grown in beautifully and serve as natural shade structures. No doubt a perfect post-dinner gathering corner for those Northern California nights.
We can’t wait to see how this dreamy backyard is put to good use this summer!
